Empire Kosher Poultry

Empire Kosher Poultry is the largest kosher poultry processor in the world. At the time of acquisition in 1992, Empire had a dominant share of the U.S. kosher markets for poultry and turkey. TGV was attracted by the high barriers to entry for potential competitors, resulting from the strict requirements for koshering products, and the opportunity to expand the company’s distribution network beyond its traditional kosher butcher shop retailer.

In a 1992 LBO, a TGV-led buying group purchased the company for $42 million, including a $12 million equity investment. The company was sold in June 1997 to a financial buyer for $95 million.
